Coil

Coil was founded in 2018 and is building the first system for monetizing the open web, starting to deploy this model within the incredible community at Hacker Noon. Coil makes it easy for creators to monetize their content across the internet and provides an alternative to advertising and site-by-site subscription models. As members enjoy the content, Coil uses a proposed open web standard called Web Monetization to stream micropayments to creators in real-time. In 2019, Coil, in collaboration with Mozilla and Creative Commons, launched the $100 million Grant for the Web to boost open, fair, and inclusive standards and innovation in Web Monetization. Coil also invested $20 million in Imgur, the community-powered entertainment platform reaching 300 million people each month.

Coil x Hacker Noon

The Internet is at a crossroads. On one side is a centralized business model that forces people to pay for content, often in the form of subscriptions or ads. On the other side is a decentralized model where creators are supported directly by their users. As you know, Hacker Noon is all about sharing knowledge and helping others. To date, Hacker Noon has launched its own content management system (dubbed Hacker Noon 2.0) to serve readers, writers, and sponsors on their own terms. The strategic partnership with Coil will introduce a way for our dedicated content creators to monetize their knowledge, stories, and information. Once Coil Monetization is enabled on your Hacker Noon Profile, Coil automatically streams micropayments to the writer’s wallet based on the amount of time Coil Members spend reading articles.
